ترمودینامیک ریشه یونانی دارد و از دو بخش θερμη به معنی گرما و δυναμις به معنی نیرو تشکیل شده که که از سرهم بندیشان می‌شود نیروی گرما شاخه‌ای از فیزیک و شیمی است که پدیده‌های ماکروسکوپیکی که از تغییر دما، فشار و حجم در یک سیستم فیزیکی اتفاق می‌افتد بررسی می‌کند.
شروع ترمودینامیک از ساخت اولین پمپ خلأ در سال ۱۶۵۰ میلادی و توسط اتو وان گریکه Otto von Guericke شروع شد و ثابت کرد که نظریه ارسطو مبنی بر اینکه طبیعت از خلا متنفر است، اشتباه است. مدتی بعد فیزیکدان و شیمی‌دان ایرلندی رابرت بویل طرز کار دستگاه جریکو را یاد گرفت و به همراه فیزیکدان انگلیسی رابرت هوک توانست اولین پمپ هوا را در سال ۱۶۵۶ بسازد و بین حجم و فشار رابطه‌ای تعریف کردند، که امروزه به قانون بویل مشهور است. سپس در سال ۱۶۷۹ شریک بویل دنیس پاپین اولین steam digester را ساخت که یک ظرف دربسته با در محکم بود که در آن بخار با فشار بالا تولید می‌شد. بررسی علمی ماشین بخار توسط سعدی کارنو شروع شد به افتخار کارنو چرخه‌ای که بر اساس دو دما کار می‌کند که بالاترین بازدهی را دارد، چرخه کارنو نامیده‌اند.

در این کتاب فصل‌های ۱ تا ۸ عنوان‌هایی‌ از مهندسی‌ مکانیک و ریاضیات، فصل‌های ۹ تا ۱۱ موضوعاتی در نظریه کنترل، و فصل‌های ۱۲ تا ۱۳ مطالبی در علوم کامپیوتری را در بر می‌‌گیرند. به علاوه، در این کتاب بر جنبه‌های محاسباتی مسائل تاکید شده است، و در پایان فصل‌هایی‌ که بیشتر درباره مکانیک بحث کرده اند، بخشی کوتاه ویژه مسائل محاسباتی در نظر گرفته شده است.

مکانیک سیالات  Fluid mechanics یکی از شاخه‌های وسیع در مکانیک محیط‌ های پیوسته را تشکیل می‌دهد. مکانیک سیالات هم با همان اصول مربوط به مکانیک جامدات آغاز می‌شود، ولی آن‌چه که سرانجام آن دو را از هم متمایز می‌سازد، این است که سیالات بر خلاف جامدات قادر به تحمل تنش برشی نیست. با دانستن این مسئله معادله‌هایی برای تحلیل حرکت سیالات طرح‌ریزی شده است. این معادلات به احترام ناویه و استوکس دو ریاضی‌دان بریتانیایی و فرانسوی به نام معادلات ناویه-استوکس نامیده می‌شوند.

معادلات اساسی حاکم بر دینامیک سیالات عبارت‌اند از معادله بقای جرم و بقای مومنتم (یا همان معادلات ناویه-استوکس) می‌باشند. با وجود ابداع معادلات حاکم بر دینامیک سیالات که تاریخچهٔ آن به بیش از ۱۵۰ سال می‌رسد، غیر از چند مورد خاص (همانند جریان بر روی صفحه تخت و جریان درون لوله‌ها در حالت آرام) حل تحلیلی برای این معادلات یافت نشده‌است. به جز چند حالت خاص اساسی مکانیک سیالات، بقیهٔ حل‌ها به صورت تجربی استخراج و استفاده می‌شود. روش دیگر برای حل معادلات استفاده از روش دینامیک محاسباتی سیالات می‌باشد.

روش اجزاء محدود یا روش المان‌های محدود روشی است عددی برای حل تقریبی معادلات دیفرانسیل جزئی و نیز حل معادله‌های انتگرالی. (کاربرد عملی اجزای محدود معمولا با نام آنالیز اجزا محدود “FEA” خوانده می‌شود) اساس کار این روش یا حذف کامل معادلات دیفرانسیل یا ساده سازی آنها به معادلات دیفرانسیل معمولی، که با روشهای عددی مثل اویلر حل می‌شوند، می‌باشد. پیدایش روش اجزاء محدود به حل مسائل پیچیدهٔ الاستیسیته و تحلیل سازه‌ها در مهندسی عمران و هوا فضا برمی گردد. این روش حاصل کار الکساندر هرنیکوف و ریچارد کورانت می‌باشد.
کتاب آنالیز المان محدود در MATLAB با نام کامل (MATLAB Codes for Finite Element Analysis) نوشته A.J.M. Ferreira از دانشگاه پرتو پرتقال مشتمل بر ۲۳۶ صفحه به زبان انگلیسی است که به بررسی کدهای نرم افزار MATLAB برای روش المان نامحدود و آنالیز جامدات (solids) و سازه ها (structures) می پردازد . این کتاب بعد از مختصر توضیحی در مورد نرم افزار MATLAB ، به سراغ روش المان نامحدود و پیاده سازی بعضی مسائل با اسکریپت های ساده و توایع رفته و مسائل زیر را مورد بحث قرار می دهد :

روغن‌های روان‌ساز دارای منشأ معدنی هستند و از نفت خام یا تصفیه روغن موتورهای کارکرده تهیه می‌شوند. فرایند تهیه روغنهای روان‌ساز در پالایشگاه شامل دو مرحله می‌باشد. این مراحل عبارتند از: ۱-تقطیر در فشار اتمسفریک ۲-تقطیر در خلأ. یکی از محصولات تقطیر در خلأ برش روغنی است که بعنوان ماده اولیه واحدهای روغن سازی وارد پالایشگاه می‌گردد. این برش روغنی تحت یک سری عملیات پالایش ، و به روغن پایه تبدیل می‌گردد.
در پالایشگاه، برش روغنی بعنوان ماده اولیه واحد روغن سازی به واحد استخراج با فورفورال فرستاده می‌شود که در آنجا مواد آروماتیک و نیز موادی که حاوی ترکیبات حلقوی غیر اشباع (بنزینی) است، از آن زدوده می‌شود. رفینت حاصل که حاوی روغن می‌باشد، به واحد موم گیری با تولوئن و متیل اتیل کتون فرستاده می‌شود تا انواع پارافین و واکس (موم) آن جداسازی گردد. روغن موم گیری شده به واحد تصفیه نهایی توسط هیدروژن ارسال می‌گردد تا روغن پایه نهایی حاصل شود.کتاب روغن های روانکار صنعتی نوشته آقای مهندس مهدی نصر آزادانی در ۲۱۱ صفحه به بررسی شناخت انواع روغن، روش های تولید، سطح کیفیت، کاربرد، تصفیه و آنالیز روغن می پردازد و سر فصل های زیر را شامل می شود:

Avoiding or controlling fatigue damage is a major issue in the design and inspection of welded structures subjected to dynamic loading. Life predictions are usually used for safe life analysis, i.e. for verifying that it is very unlikely that fatigue damage will occur during the target service life of a structure. Damage tolerance analysis is used for predicting the behavior of a fatigue crack and for planning of in-service scheduled inspections.
It should be a high probability that any cracks appearing are detected and repaired before they become critical. In both safe life analysis and the damage tolerance analysis there may be large uncertainties involved that have to be treated in a logical and consistent manner by stochastic modeling.
This book focuses on fatigue life predictions and damage tolerance analysis of welded joints and is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the common practice used for safe life and damage tolerance analysis with reference to rules and regulations. The second part emphasises stochastic modeling and decision-making under uncertainty, while the final part is devoted to recent advances within fatigue research on welded joints. Industrial examples that are included are mainly dealing with offshore steel structures. Spreadsheets which accompany the book give the reader the possibility for hands-on experience of fatigue life predictions, crack growth analysis and inspection planning. The contents of this book originates from 35 years of teaching Steam Generators to graduate students at the Politecnico of Milan, Italy and from 45 years of professional activity in this area. This book has been written for practising designers, users, and engineers of steam generators in order to guide them through practical problems and help avoiding technical mistakes. Also the academic scientists and university students who are interested in problems of power generation can find useful information.

The first part of the book presents the different types of generators which are installed either in industrial plants like power plants. In particular boilers for energy of regenerative sources are included. Information about the optimized solutions, the energetic saving, and the mistakes to be avoided is given to the designer. In the second section both, the thermodynamic calculation and the fluid dynamics are developed according to rigorous scientific criteria. In this section, the author presents several of his original studies.
